CLI: 33 covered, the Rust rewrite wave

2026-10-13

We have covered 33 CLI & terminal repositories. 27 of them have a star count recorded from the day we covered them, and together those have gained +81,022 stars since (measured 2026-09-13).

The full list of what we have covered lives on our CLI & terminal page. This post is about which of them moved.

The terminal is not going away; it is being rebuilt for a new generation of developers, with Rust becoming a popular choice for making these tools faster and safer. It feels less like a passing fashion and more like a quiet upgrade of something developers have relied on for decades.

What moved

The 27 repositories with a star baseline held 793,448 stars between them on the day each was covered. Today they hold 874,470, a change of +81,022 (+10.2%).

26 gained stars, 1 lost stars.

6 of the 33 repositories have no star count recorded from the day they were covered, so no change can be stated for them. They are listed below without a delta. We do not estimate figures we did not capture.

Pulling away

These projects make the terminal feel more useful, faster, or easier to work with in today’s AI-driven world. They are not simply rebuilding old tools—they give developers a reason to change the way they work.

Barely moved

11 of the 21 repositories we covered more than 30 days ago gained less than 5% since. Anything covered more recently is left out of this comparison, having had little time to move.

  • microsoft/coreutils covered 2026-08-11, 4,928 to 5,159 stars (+231, +4.7%)
  • wagoodman/dive covered 2026-07-28, 54,344 to 54,558 stars (+214, +0.4%)
  • httpie/cli covered 2026-07-13, 38,304 to 38,496 stars (+192, +0.5%)
  • tqdm/tqdm covered 2026-07-28, 31,229 to 31,333 stars (+104, +0.3%)
  • vercel/hyper covered 2026-07-29, 44,661 to 44,729 stars (+68, +0.2%)

Biggest faller

avajs/ava went from 20,850 stars on 2026-05-23 to 20,825 (-25). A falling count usually means stars were removed by users or the repository changed hands. We have not investigated which applies here.

How these numbers were collected

"Stars then" is the count recorded by our pipeline on the day the repository was reviewed. "Stars now" is the count from the GitHub API on 2026-09-13. Both are stored per repository in our star history dataset. We did not run or test any of these projects; every figure is a count, not an assessment.

Each repository links to its own page on https://githubtrends.app, which carries the video review and the full coverage record.

Every repository we have covered under this topic, including the ones without a baseline, is listed on the CLI & terminal page.
